Robin Raikkonen joins Red Bull Junior Team: The Iceman’s legacy enters a true driver factory

Robin Raikkonen, 11-year-old son of 2026 Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, has joined the Red Bull Junior Team. The move was announced around the same time Red Bull confirmed that Mercedes talent scout Gwen Lagrue would lead its young driver programme from the beginning of next year. Robin will enter the academy at the same point in time. The Red Bull junior programme has been one of the most successful pathways in F1. Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen both came through its ranks, while Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly also used it as a route to the grid. With two teams in Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls, the system offers a practical bridge from junior formulas into Formula 1. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies described Robin as a driver who has already shown exceptional karting ability, racecraft and natural talent. Mekies also highlighted Robin’s maturity, calm approach and clear focus. He said Red Bull would develop him step by step, without placing unnecessary pressure on his shoulders, and would provide the time, support and resources needed to maximise his potential. Kimi Raikkonen confirmed that the family had held extensive talks with Red Bull. He praised Laurent Mekies and the team’s support, saying the programme offers a convincing and comprehensive path for Robin’s development. Kimi also stressed that Red Bull’s junior alumni include Vettel and Verstappen, and that Robin will join the programme with great humility. Robin is currently racing go-karts and has already achieved success in national and international Rotax and WSK championships. The Raikkonen family regularly posts about his progress on Instagram. His route will likely move through Formula 4, Formula Regional, Formula 3 and Formula 2 before any possible F1 graduation. The most important question is not how fast Robin can reach Formula 1. It is whether he can be allowed to grow away from the spotlight while carrying one of the most famous names in modern motorsport. Red Bull’s challenge is to protect him from the noise and build a long, sustainable path rather than turn him into an early headline.
