Station situation
Combe Hill Wendy is on a radio mast between Combe and Faccombe, just to the West of the Newbury bypass. It primarily serves the popular Hang Gliding and Paragliding site of Combe Gibbett, around a mile to the North.
For detailed location, see the linked map.
OS Grid ref: SU389599
Altitude: 942ft (287m)
Interpreting Readings
Because the Wendy station is on a flat plateau, not near any edges, it reads the true windspeed in the area. Northerly winds on Combe Gibbett edge will often be higher than this in the "compression" or "venturi" zone close to the hill. This is particularly true in stable atmospheric conditions, that is, high pressure and an inversion. Those flying Combe Gibbet in these conditions should expect the winds at launch to be higher than the Wendy readings, but slackening off to match Wendy once you are up and away from the hill. I think more...
