Nympsfield Wendy is on a radio mast just to the West of Nympsfield village, between Nympsfield and Frocester. It primarily serves the popular Hang Gliding and Paragliding site of Frocester, a few hundred yards to the West, but it also is relevant to the Sailplane users of the Gliding Club around 1 mile to the North. For detailed location, see the linked map.|OS Grid ref: SO800011

The anemometer is approx 30 feet above ground level, and is in clear air for most directions. However, there is some slight shadowing in Westerly winds, due to trees and terrain nearby, which may reduce readings in that direction. The prime wind direction for flying Frocester is Westerly. Selsey, 2-3 miles to the North, takes more NW winds, I believe. Because the Wendy station is on a flat plateau, not near any edges, it reads the true windspeed in the area. Westerly winds on Frocester or NW winds on Selsey edge will often be higher than this in the "compression" or "venturi" zone close to the hill. This is particularly true in stable atmospheric conditions, that is, high pressure and an inversion. Those flying these sites in these conditions should expect the winds at launch to be higher than the Wendy readings, but slackening off to match Wendy once you are up and away from the hill. more...
Frocester and Selsey (different sites o on the same west-facing ridge) are flown by the Avon Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club who should be contacted before flying a Hang or Paraglider in the area. I understand the ridge is also flown by model flyers.
