Station Situation
Shining Tor Wendy station is on top of the famous Cat and Fiddle pub, on top of the moors between Buxton and Macclesfield. At 1700ft above sea level, it is one of the 3 highest stations we have (the other 2 are Blorenge and Wether Fell, also 1700ft.) The Shining Tor site is approx 1/2 mile to the West, and is used by Hang Gliders, and Paragliders, who belong to the Peak Soaring Association who should be contacted before flying a Hang or Paraglider in the area. The site is also used by model flyers, I understand, and is popular with walkers and hikers. For detailed location, see the linked map.|OS Grid ref:

Interpreting Readings
The actual site at Shining Tor takes winds principally from W and WSW, but the Wendy station is on a flat plateau, 1/.2 mile away, so winds on the edge are often stronger than Wendy says, due to "compression" or "venturi" effect over the hill. The station is used check the winds for other nearby hills, which take other wind directions, such as Mam Tor, a famous Easterly site, or Edge Top (SSW). The anemometer is approx 50 feet above ground level, and is in clear air for most directions. Because it is well back from the hill edge, it reads the true windspeed in the area, NOT the winds you can expect on the edge itself, which may be considerably higher, due to "compression" or "venturi" effects. In other words, the Wendy station will read the winds you experience once you have taken off and climbed out of the compression band in front of the hill. more...
