Station Situation

Devils Dyke Wendy station is on top of the famous Devils Dyke Hotel, near Poynings, some 4 miles north of Brighton, on the South Downs. For detailed location, see the linked map.|OS Grid ref: TQ259109|Altitude: 663ft (202m)

Interpreting Readings

The actual site at Devils Dyke takes winds principally from N, NNW, and NW, but the Wendy station is used to check the winds for other nearby hills, which take other wind directions. The station is screened slightly by trees in Easterly and Southwesterly winds, and may under-read in those directions. The anemometer is approx 60 feet above ground level. more...

Pilot Notes

The site is used by Hang Gliders, and Paragliders, who belong to the Southern Hang Gliding Club, who should be contacted before flying a Hang or Paraglider in the area. The site is also used by model flyers, slope soarers, and is a pleasant recreational area, with a good view of the South Downs. There is a golf club nearby, as well.

Service Status

27th Jan 2013. I went to replace the wind heads on 15th Oct and to move them up to the top of the mast. Steve Greenwood kindly came along to help. However, the winds got up so strong that once again we were unable to climb the mast all the way, so had to leave the wind heads half way up. This results in lower wind readings, so I have cranked up the software calibration a bit to compensate. Please give me feedback on the current setup, and I will tweak it for best results. I am planning another trip down when weather allows to move the new heads up to the top of the mast.
